My students need books that represent them. Based on statistics compiled by the Cooperative Children's Book Center and School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, only 10% of children's pictures books include a main character with an African American or Black child. Only 7% are of Asian descent, 5% Latinx, and 1% Native American. In comparison, 50% of children's picture books depict White children and 27% of books show only animal characters. These statistics are from all published children's books in 2018. Your donation, however small or large will without a doubt change the lives of my students. As a third year teacher, a majority of the books I inherited in my classroom are not a true reflection of my class community. I want to be sure to give my students a "mirror" to see themselves through the books they read, to connect to the characters and the story. I also want to be sure to give my students a "window" to see life from other's points of view and learn more about the world and communities around them. "If we don’t give children books that are literary mirrors as well as windows to the whole world of possibility, if these books don’t give them the opportunity to see outside themselves, then how can we expect them to grow into adults who connect in meaningful ways to a global community, to people who might look or live differently than they?
