Representation, diversity and comfort in the classroom is critical in allowing students to feel represented, celebrated, and supported. As a first year teacher, I am coming in excited to create a classroom environment that is welcoming to my first bunch of students. It is important for me to provide my students with a classroom that will celebrate their culture, allow them to learn in a way that is best for them through alternative seating options, and encourage literacy with a classroom library. At a school like mine where 80% of students are Black and brown, I want to begin cultivating a classroom where they are represented. I hope to build a classroom library that will show students there are many texts with characters that look like them. Students need to see they are represented in their classrooms and in the texts they read. I want to ensure there is representation in all aspects of their learning environment. The use of posters of influential leaders in their respective cultures will allow students to see representation in their classroom. A variation of flags from Historically Black Colleges and Universities will allow students to be exposed to colleges from their culture. As my students are diverse in ethnicities, they are also diverse in learning styles. My hope is for students to be comfortable in the way they learn. I want them to be provided with the opportunity to choose seating that will allow them to learn best. Alternative seating options are a wonderful and equitable way for students to be comfortable and have the opportunity to learn in a way that works best for them. First impressions are everything. I want their first impression of the classroom to be one that makes an impact. I want them to feel comfortable, represented and celebrated.
