One thing I quickly realized while distance learning from home was that the most participation came from when my students were able to see me and have a "normal" circle time. Sure, I could post assignments and patiently wait for their work to come back showing me that they fully understood 1-to-1 correspondence or phonological awareness but the most authentic learning experience came from when we were able to come together, see faces, and enjoy a good book with each other. I want my students to not just see a child in the artwork of each book but to see themselves and all they are capable of. Books about little boys and girls celebrating unique hairstyles, stories to encourage one to stand up for what is right even if it feels scary, to teach students it is okay to be different. Children deserve to see themselves as the beautiful, courageous people they can be and it all starts with the positivity we expose them to.
