Our library is a special place in our classroom. We read and enjoy books together there, students get comfortable and complete their work there, and they cozy up and read books there. These books will add to my classroom library in a way that allows all students to see themselves and others reflected in the books available to them. As the third grade reading teacher for our school, I want to ensure that my classroom library provides a mirror for our students—a world in which they can see characters and themes that reflect their identities and experiences, such as skin color or hair style, family and home life structures, spoken languages, or abilities. Once students “feel seen themselves,” it’s also critical that they be exposed to characters and stories that are different—windows into the lives, customs, and beliefs of others, so that when they grow up, they are able to work with and appreciate all different kinds of people.
