We are a growing band program that serves a diverse group of students that includes both general education students and special education students who have needs such as Autism. Small percussion instruments do not require students to read music, but simply follow a beat and this allows students who may struggle with reading to participate in the music programs. Small percussion instruments allow all students to participate in the music program as well as add a much-needed depth of sound to the music programs. These include castanets, shakers, triangles, and blocks. As students advance through learning to use the small percussion instruments they will then transition to more complex instruments. The small percussion instruments will also help provide a depth of sound that only these instruments can to the sound produced by the music program.
