In my classroom I would like to teach my students to be empathetic and to embrace what makes us unique and celebrate the things we have in common. To promote diversity I would like to expose my group of first-graders to various cultural and social groups through literature. A library of books with diverse characters and experiences will allow my first-graders to make personal connections. These books, puppets and multicultural cut-outs will also help them develop their own self-identity and feel more confident in themselves as well as in their interactions with others. My students are the future and I want to help them feel valued and empowered. These materials will help my students understand different perspectives, appreciate others’ strengths, and become good citizens.
