I am a teacher the pushes reading. Each day students read 10 minutes in my class and more for homework. Many students choose books from my classroom library, which means I have the ability to influence what they read. I believe that reading builds empathy in readers. From there, they are able to tackle real-world situations with a stronger foundation. In today's America, they will need that foundation to be accepting of people that look different than them and to help fight for equality. This is vital for the community I live in. My 8th-grade students live in a very white world. The consequence of this is students of color don't see themselves that much in the classroom and white students don't interact much with diversity. I'm hoping to solve both problems by adding books with diverse characters in my classroom library. This will help students of color gain access to literature that has characters like them in the lead. For white students, this helps them gain an understanding of what issues people of color go through. Books will include Dear Martin, Just Mercy, Born a Crime, Hidden Figures, All American Boys, etc.
