Our local community has become vastly more diverse in the last twenty years. Unfortunately, my classroom library has not. Help put books into the hands of young readers in which they can see themselves as main characters. Children need to see themselves in the books they read to help promote self-esteem, confidence, and multiculturalism. All students must have the opportunity to read stories that they can culturally relate to. All students need to feel accepted for who they are and who they can be. In order to teach the diverse group of students I have, and help them realize their unlimited potential as intelligent, caring, and important members of society I need to provide them with positive models. I need to be able to improve the books in my classroom by adding more titles that include diverse main characters doing everyday things. It is very difficult to find multicultural texts that are appropriate for young readers, and that are affordable.
