The book I chose is engaging, thought-provoking, and connects to issues in our society today. We do not have access to recent texts that handle culturally relevant topics. My students need a longer non-fiction text to build reading stamina and understand a nuanced and developed argument. We do not have access to recent texts that handle culturally relevant topics. With "Just Mercy" I can combine documentaries to analyze, news articles from multiple viewpoints, and even tweets. This text connects to many aspects of life and gives a critique of the criminal justice system which is a debatable subject with many layers that students like to wrestle with.
