We are requesting books that celebrate people of color. Currently our classroom library is fairly white while many of the students are not. As an educator, I am ashamed of the lack of diversity I have made available for my students. In an effort to do better, I have curated a list of books that showcase characters who are Black-- their successes, their challenges, their unique experiences. The purpose of these books will be multi-faceted. Some of them be used as read alouds to facilitate discussions based around race. Others will be incorporated into the English curriculum which is also currently lacking when it comes to showcasing other races.
