This summer I have sorted through 17 years of collected books and realized my classroom library needs to be overhauled. By updating my classroom library students will be exposed to fresh literature. Many of the current books in my classroom library are ten years old or older. Only 5% (135 books) in my library have a copyright within the last five years. Students will be more actively engaged in their reading by updating my library and providing them with fresh, new, and relevant reading material. My students need to also see themselves in the books they are choosing to read. Many of the books that will be integrated into my classroom library will be diverse literature. These books will provide the reader a window into someone else's life. This will help my students become more emphatic to the world around them. The multi-cultural books will also provide readers a mirror where they can see themselves. This mirror can help my diverse students feel important and valued as they see themselves in the curriculum that is offered in the classroom. The new books purchased for my classroom will be inventoried into a website called Booksource and then sorted into specific book bins in my classroom. Students will have the opportunity to search Booksource for a specific book (by title, subject, key words) or by book selecting books from the book bins. Students can take these books and read them independently at school or at home. I also plan on spotlighting the new books added to my classroom library by making short online commercials about the texts. These commercials will be shared with students through Schoology (our school's learning management system) throughout the year.
