I often say, most of the world’s problems could be solved by sending those involved back to kindergarten. This is because kindergarten is where children learn how to problem solve, get along with others, find common ground through listening, understand through shared experiences, as well as learn to recognize and practice empathy. In my classroom we focus on being kind and treating ourselves and others with respect. I feel many adults in our world today have lost sight of these very crucial things they first learned in kindergarten. Given what is going on in the world currently, in addition to the systemic racism that has been woven into the history of our country, I feel strongly it’s a teacher’s responsibility to make sure we are preparing our students for the world they are set to inherit. Our country’s future is currently sitting in our classrooms today. Having a collection of books that celebrates diversity and promotes social justice is a necessity in every classroom! Through education we can give students the foundation and social tools they need to be the change we so desperately need in our country! I feel strongly that these books will not only greatly influence my students, but me as an educator as well, and will help to supplement the social justice curriculum I feel is so important to start teaching from a young age. Many experts have said the best way to help children understand complex ideas is through reading high-quality children's books. Unfortunately, many teachers struggle to have access to funding for even basic school supplies, much less extensive libraries of culturally diverse books, so this would be an invaluable gift for our classroom! Thank you for helping to make a difference - Our future literally depends on it!
