Picture books are filled with emotions in the words the author uses and the wonderful illustrations to support the text. The characters in these books experience the ups and downs of the human condition in a dramatic fashion. I will use literature as a gateway to social and emotional learning in my classroom. The conversations surrounding these books before, during, and after they are read are endless. Students will be motivated to learn from these characters and from each other, which will lead to personal growth and self-discovery. These books will help students understand and navigate our complex world of emotions and the difficulties that are surrounding us daily. These titles will teach students social-emotional skills such as manners, identifying emotions, bravery, how to overcome worry, problem-solving, overcoming difficulties, and dealing with disappointment.
