Schools across America historically teach "the classics" which are often written by dead, white guys. In order to offer my students a wide variety of lenses through which to see the world, I would like to diversify my classroom library by adding a variety of high-interest Black and Brown authors. Giving students choice helps them establish their voice. Every 6-8 weeks, I require my students to read a novel of their choice. Oftentimes, the most popular novels are already checked out from our school library and my struggling readers will easily give up looking for a book. I believe I can hook more readers and help students establish their voice by having a diverse, high-interest library in my classroom. By offering my students a more diverse classroom library, I hope to open their eyes to the injustices that happen in our world daily while giving them a safe place to learn and discuss while working to close the colorblindness gap.
