Racial injustice is not new. However, I have been seeing a new desire to make the drastic changes that need to be made in our society. I am hopeful for the future and hopeful that our children can be radical agents of change. However, in order to do that, they need to be a part of the conversation. And being a preschool teacher, I have the beautiful opportunity to facilitate learning about these topics in the classroom. I have been seeing so many people looking for small, tangible ways to make a difference during this time. One of the best ways to teach children about racial injustice is through picture books. It is a way for children to see themselves represented, it is a window to the world around them, and it is an opportunity to discuss big ideas. Believe me, preschoolers have an immense capacity to talk about deep topics. They can provide some of the most beautiful insights on the world, and are very receptive to conversations about diversity because it is not complicated to them. I truly believe that early childhood is the time to introduce topics such as racism because they have such a deep understanding of the idea that everyone should be loved no matter what they look like. In addition, I want all of my students to see themselves represented in literature, and feel that they are seen, heard, and loved. Help me fund multicultural books for my classroom! I have included books that represent different races, religions, socioeconomic statuses, and types of families. You will be helping to create future leaders. Thank you so much for all of your help.
