This past year, I introduced a choice-based art room at my school. We have several art-making stations for the students to choose from, one of them being an iPad station for creating stop-motion-videos. It is a popular station, but we only have one iPad at the moment, so the amount of students able to utilize this station is limited. iPads enable the students to do so much more than stop-motion-videos: they enable students to engage and interpret content in interactive ways, modify, expand, and experiment with photography and hands-on art in innovative artistic ways. There are a plethora of apps that can be used on iPads in the art room. In addition, iPads will enable my students to upload their own work into Artsonia, the online art gallery for students, so parents can view their child's work, even if they cannot physically come into the school to see it. With the Covid-19 interruption to teaching in the public school, it is unclear what our teaching will look like in the fall. In order to provide more learning spaces with 10 or fewer students per room, I will most likely be on a cart next year. That in itself will be challenging, but moreover, the idea of keeping art supplies sanitized in a way that will limit the spread of germs is an overwhelming consideration. It is my hope the iPads will not only open the door to technology in art for my students, but it will also be a welcome solution to the sanitizing of supplies on the art cart. I should be able to easily sanitize the iPads between each class, minimizing the spread of germs tremendously.
