I am building a multicultural and gender expansive library for my two cohorts of 3rd grade students so they can see themselves and their communities reflected in literature! I hope to lend out books to students while also using these texts for virtual read alouds as we move into distance learning. We know that books are a launching pad and medium for all kinds of learning and I hope to highlight the voices and experiences of LGBTQ+ people of color as I teach a range of topics from science to history to English Language Arts (ELA). Since Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is shifting to online learning for at minimum four weeks (most likely longer than that), sending students physical copies of books will be vital for maintaining connection to the printed word and to the classroom. Additionally, I want students to have science and literacy journals (plus writing materials) at home so they can continue to learn without spending too much time on screen. It is essential for all students to consistently practice writing and reflection, so sending home notebooks to each student will ensure equity of materials. Your donation also supports me, the teacher, as I transform my home into a virtual classroom where learning takes place. Thank you so much for your help as we begin the unpredictable world of distance learning! I appreciate you.
