As any 8/9-year-old will tell you, third grade is a big deal because it is the year we transition from picture books to chapter books! Because this is my first year teaching third grade, most of my kindergarten-level materials won't quite support this monumental transition. By expanding our classroom library to include favorites like Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Junie B Jones, we can inspire our readers to step up to more challenging texts while peaking their interest. These books will be kept safe and sound on classroom shelves so we are able to enjoy them as a whole class during read alouds as well as independently when the students have the opportunity to check the books out for themselves.
