Given that the vast majority of students at our elementary school fit a similar demographic (lower-to-middle class, white/caucasian, limited access to internet/technology), educators understand the value of incorporating cultural awareness and inclusivity into lessons and resources. In many ways, teachers act as the gatekeepers of diversity and common ground for students who lack appropriate exposure to the world around them. The Second Grade staff is listening and learning, and we want to advance our read-aloud collection to better reach and educate our audience. If being out of school due to COVID19 has taught us anything, it is the truth that nothing is more important than reading to our students. By investing in classroom resources - specifically, books - that promote diversity and cultural awareness, students can begin the process of understanding what lies beyond rural southern Ohio. It is our mission to ensure that the resources we use in the classroom are sensitive to differences, promote individuality and inclusivity, and avoid hurtful viewpoints that stem from stereotypes and misconceptions. By obtaining reading resources that feature everything from female protagonists to characters from a different culture to age-old stories from a new, diverse perspective, students can take their existing excitement about school and also learn that differences are to be celebrated and diversity is just as fun and exciting as school itself.
