Reading at home is a vital part of the progress a child will make in reading at school, but many children do not have their own home libraries to read from and having their own books is different than just borrowing books from school, then having to return them. My goal is for every student to have at least the beginnings of a home library by the end of their first grade year. I do this by getting sponsors to donate to our Scholastic Book Buddies program. The money goes into our Scholastic Book Club account and then each month I order enough books that every first grader at our school gets to choose one to take home with them. This coming year our district will be focusing a great deal on Social Emotional Learning in response to the effects of the current pandemic and school closures, so I want to start our home libraries with a book about Kindness. The Kindess Pack I am hoping to order from Scholastic has wonderful titles that I feel will be a terrific way to start first grade and to get students excited about collecting more books throughout the year. :-)
