As an English/ Language Arts teacher, one of the greatest challenges I face is convincing students to read. I've found that it's very hard to teach students ELA content if they aren't good readers. Unfortunately, many of my students at the middle school level are not good readers and refuse to put in the time practicing their reading skills because they just don't like to read. I believe that students can't fall in love with reading if they can't find themselves in a book. For this reason, I'm trying to add books to my classroom library that reflect my students' own diversity in race, background, interests, and abilities. I've asked in particular for graphic novels and books that will connect with my minority students. For my students who already love reading, I believe these books can help them see others' perspectives and gain empathy.
