Most of the novels used on our campus are from 10+ years ago. They are uninspiring and dull. They focus on white protagonists and are not very relatable to today's kids. Teachers are working hard to get new books approved for use in our classrooms, but then we have to prove that we can purchase them—another challenge! New Kid, an engaging graphic novel, follows the experience of a Black middle schooler as he faces the challenges of everyday life, but includes his powerful experiences with microaggressions and racial stereotypes. These themes are essential for our students to learn about considering all the injustices that people face in our society every day. This book is a graphic novel, which kids absolutely love. It will pull in our reluctant readers and the readers below grade level. This book would allow teachers to teach our middle schoolers about what microaggressions are and how to become allies for those who are different. I have proposed this novel for district approval—I just need the funding! Please help me bring a fresh new book to my students who desperately want one!
