Clay days are our favorite days at Heritage, where students get to bring their sketches to life in a tangible, three-dimensional space. The benefits of ceramics are immeasurable, but to name a few, sculpting strengthens visual spacial skills, calms the nerves, sharpens creativity, and exemplifies chemical changes to matter. On clay days, students get to witness the chemical change of matter as their soft, malleable, clay transforms into a solid form: a stone-like bisque. Seeing their art turn from squishy mud to a permanent sculpture makes every kid feel like Michelangelo, and they leave my class ready to take on the world. Every child from Kindergarten through fifth grade gets to sculpt in our school, and since it's an independent activity, our children can still engage in ceramic works while social distancing—as long as we have enough materials to allow us to sculpt and paint without sharing tools. Please help us continue to learn and grow through the arts, and be on the lookout for the next wave of famous artists from Richlands, North Carolina in the coming years, as there will surely be many.
