The books that I chose for my students are books where ideas are based on real emotions and a real understanding of grief—one our young children can identify with. In Tears of a Tiger, the action is intense and the problems are real. Our children are facing so many real problems right now in our country and these books help to paint the picture of reality for them. In Monster, the book addresses racism, gangs, drugs, prison, and misunderstanding which in many ways fit our students' situations and present reality.
