My classroom library is a place where I share books with the whole group as well as individual students in my kindergarten classroom who are learning to read independently. In our classroom we have several races and cultures represented, but not very many cultures are often represented in children's literature. I want my students to be able to see themselves reflected in the stories we read and be able to relate to the characters within. My hope is that with these more diverse books, we may all grow to understand and appreciate other cultures and people who don't necessarily look like we do. I want my students to go on to first grade with a deeper respect and understanding for people and their differences. I have chosen several books which do not only portray a variety of cultures, but also have deep moral lessons and serve as rich literature. I will be able to use several of these books to teach ongoing lessons that will reach across multiple disciplines (such as science and social studies) and will help my students better connect to material, all while learning new perspectives within their world.
