I have been thinking long and hard about my own role in the current state of our country. As an educator, and a white woman, I have come to realize that I am not doing enough. My hope is that by stocking my classroom with these amazing books, and then reading them out loud to my class, I will be able to start an honest dialogue with my students around the topics of race, justice, equality and equity. Students need to feel seen and heard. Our school has few students of color, but I believe that makes these conversations even more important. These students need to know that they are valued. The white students in my class need to learn how to have these sometimes uncomfortable conversations and how they can turn their newfound knowledge into action as we all strive toward becoming anti-racists. We can all speak out, share our stories and be allies during this time of crisis.
