Having access to diverse, contemporary, multicultural literature such as the titles requested in this project will engage my students in current world discussions, will raise their awareness and hopefully bring them to a new empathy for others and understanding of themselves. Our curriculum does not currently offer much diversity and I cannot think of a more crucial time to ensure that my students have this opportunity to see themselves and others in the books they read. These books will be used for social justice book clubs where small groups of students will read and discuss the same titles. They will also take center stage in my classroom library for student's independent reading choices.
