Taking notes is often a stumbling block for students on the autism spectrum. We often don't realize how many skills are required to be an effective notetaker. To provide support in this area, my social thinking students often have accommodations that address extra time for note taking, providing copies of notes, or taking pictures of notes when a general education teacher writes on the board. Paraprofessionals accompany my students to their general education classes to provide these supports and we have an amazing staff. You would be amazed at the pages of handwritten notes that are photocopied daily in my classroom. Students with social deficits or social anxiety will often forgo getting a copy of notes or taking a picture of the board in a general education classroom for fear of standing out - this project is designed to combat that barrier to success! By providing our paraprofessionals with Rocketbook smart notebooks and pens, students will be able to receive their notes instantly via email or text without any interruption or undue attention during class. By placing Rocketbook Beacons on the whiteboards in each general education core class that our students push out to, paras and students will be able to take a quick picture of the board from any angle and instantly upload a crisp, clear PDF file of the notes without any of their peers knowing. The academic and social waters of high school are difficult to navigate for all students. However, for students with the social deficits, social anxiety, and executive functioning deficits that often impact my students in the social thinking unit, it adds another barrier to success. I believe that this project will not only improve their academic success but their social well being and their overall high school experience!
