My school is located in a small homogeneous town in Minnesota. When our students walk around their hometown, everyone knows them, and everyone looks the same. There is little access to diversity, and our students would like that to change. As an English teacher, I want to create an informed and accurate inclusive curriculum by providing windows into the diverse cultures that contribute to the United States. Our students are eager to learn about diversity. They seek opportunities to engage in the larger, more diverse surrounding communities. For example, many of the students in my class are active members of our Philanthropy and Youth organization, a student-led service group that works with nonprofits in the Fargo-Moorhead and surrounding areas, I plan to add the novel to the English 11-12 curriculum because it explores systemic racism and white privilege. Students will engage is relevant and meaningful discussion regarding racism and ways to dismantle it. The novel explore issues highly relevant today, and it encourages students to use their voices to promote societal change and equity. As they read, discuss, and reflect on the story, students gain empathy and the skills necessary to become informed citizens.
