I remember growing up with classroom pets, but allergies made it difficult to sustain. Fish are a great example to teach young children about the importance of animals in our world and the responsibilty of taking care of a pet. Allowing children to experience animals in real life helps children to gain responsibility, respect, and develop scientific skills such as observation and questioning about different types of animals. My students love learning about animals. Every year we have a unit that studies butterflies and I'd love for them to learn more about other animals.
