I have selected a variety of books that will teach my students about social justice, equality, and diversity. These books will be used for reading lessons, read alouds, and students' independent reading time. These lessons and read alouds will serve as opportunities to have discussions about differences and why it is so important to accept everyone. With these books, my students will learn about cultures and races from all over the world. These books will broaden my students' horizons and expose them to cultures, beliefs, and other things that they might not already know. These books may also reflect the cultures, races, social classes, and disabilities inside the four walls of my very own classroom. It is important for children to seem themselves represented in books and media to help with self-concept and self-esteem. Rudine Sims Bishop said it best when she said, “Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created or recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of a larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books.” Most importantly, this project is going to help teach my students about acceptance. Having these lessons and teaching them about people that may look different from them will lead to a more accepting generation.
