It has been several years since I have had the funds to updat my classroom library. Many of the book series have first books that were written more than 20 years ago. In looking through the variety of books available to my students, I find that I have been negligent in providing a wide range of characters for my students to engage with during independent reading. The early chapter books are especially lacking in representing the diversity of my students. I feel compelled to provide both fiction and non-fiction books that my students can read and in which they will see themselves reflected in the content. I remember as a child eagerly reading any biography about a woman, as they were not as readily available as biographies about men. hope to also provide my class with biographies of individuals who reflect all students and inspire them to greatness. Many of these books will be used as read alouds and then made available for students to self-select for independent reading. In showcasing a wide range of characters, I strive to make my classroom library inclusive of all my cherished students.
