A vast majority of my 9th grade students read below the 4th grade level. That being said, I still end up with a handful that read off the charts. I think a graphic novel like Maus will offer more accessibility to my struggling students, while still challenging my gifted students. A graphic novel will help engage reluctant readers as well. A class set like this will help me differentiate instruction. Last year was my first year teaching. I didn’t have anything, but a classroom library I had been putting together (books from the Goodwill) since I was an undergrad student. I thought my district would help me buy class sets, but I found out that you have to purchase items first, then be reimbursed. I wait tables just to make ends meet. I don’t have the extra income I need to get these class sets on my own!
