I switched from private school and began teaching at both of my public elementary schools three days before they were shut down, due to COVID. The personal connections I usually make with my students are taking a bit more time to form, since we are virtual. Most of my students can't afford white paper and basic art supplies, so through the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, I taught art history, the art elements and guided drawing. This school year I would like to get my students to make personal connections to their artwork. I plan on doing this by exposing them to a wide array of art materials (including watercolor paints), by encouraging experimentation and manipulation of materials, and by introducing student centered themes. I a $0 budget this year, so I would like to have enough materials for each student in my class to not have to share and/or to send home supplies to those who need them. Art is always important but more so now when children are facing uncertainty and instability. One of my students reached out to me this summer and wrote, "I like expressing my feelings in art as well as many other artists in this entire world, if I’m feeling sad, I draw something sad, if I’m feeling happy I draw what I feel!" Any support would be greatly appreciated by my students and myself.
