Adding books with diverse characters and themes to our fourth-grade classroom libraries will continue to enhance the print-rich classrooms that we strive to create. Our classroom libraries are a place where students can go to seek topics of interest and curiosity, explore their imagination, identify with familiarity, and learn about antiracist actions and beliefs. Our students really enjoy exploring different topics and connecting their reading to their personal lives and experiences. All of these books have been chosen with our students in mind. Our students will be able to choose from a wide variety of books, which will help them continue to enjoy their independent reading time while learning about a greater range of experiences. With these new books and the magnet display shelf, our students will be able to choose from a variety of books about a diverse range of cultures, topics, traditions, lifestyles, races, and more. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will help our students grow as readers, as well as increase their sense of self-awareness and understanding of others. Using well-chosen books as a starting point for discussions and activities about topics such as race and privilege is an effective way to help children understand and process difficult topics. Increasing the representation of diversity in our classroom libraries will provide them with countless opportunities to broaden their perspective on themselves, others, and society as a whole.
