I will use the books as read alouds and discuss skin color, celebrate differences between us, and to support the Social Justice Standards for first AND second grade. We will write ideas on whiteboards during planning time with markers. We will use the range of colors during our writer's workshop time- because students write and draw about themselves. I need many more diverse books and crayons/colors for my many diverse students. I will use the books to engage in conversations about race and injustices during our read aloud time. My students need to see images of themselves in books for engagement and learning. My class is all colors, and we must reflect that in our available texts. When my students pick books, they want people and characters to look like them. I want to provide an appropriate ratio of texts that reflect my students.
