In 3rd grade in Indiana, students have to take the standardized test IREAD-3 which tests students on how well they can comprehend text on grade level. They also have to take another standardized test in the spring called ILEARN that goes covers ELA and math. A lot of my students are often below grade level when they come to 3rd grade. I take it upon myself to try and make learning as fun and engaging as possible for them. In order to do this, I have found the use of games to be extremely beneficial to my students. By having reading games that reinforce key reading skills students are not only increasing fluency and comprehension, but they are also practicing for these standardized tests and becoming more confident readers in a fun way. They often don't even realize they are working on their reading while playing. I want to be able to have a variety of reading games on a variety of different levels to ensure every student is able to play these reading games as reinforcement skills and that I have enough to last the entire school year and keep my students wanting to play. Not only do these games provide academic supports they also help improve students' social skills. Students have to work together and practice working in pairs and teams. Students will have to work to figure out how to disagree properly and share. With these games, they won’t mind practicing reading because they would be so engaged in the games. The more involved they are, the more they take away from the experience. I want to bring more excitement to learning for our students. I want them to build confidence in themselves and be the best they can be so they all have a bright future ahead.
