Throughout my first two years of teaching, I have learned the importance of social-emotional learning and emotional regulation. I know that my students cannot learn academics if their mind is elsewhere - tired, hungry, frustrated, or angry. I have tried to help my students take a break and regulate their emotions back to baseline (calm). I currently have a take a break area and a few "calm tools" to help students regulate their emotions or get their mind on something else. I am looking for new tools and books to teach students self-regulation tips and tricks for future use, inside and outside of the classroom. Some students need headphones to reduce noise, or books to focus on when they are upset. I've noticed that other students calm easier when they have a mental task occupying their mind, such as word searches, coloring books, or mazes. Other students can self-regulate their emotions with sensory objects, such as the texture squares or thera putty. I know that I won't be able to give these tools to my students and expect them to know how to use and apply them. I plan to slowly introduce each tool and teach students how a certain tool should be used to help calm their body and regulate their emotions. Self-regulation is not all about tangible tools; I also plan to teach strategies that they can take with them anywhere, such as counting down from ten or using positive affirmations to believe in themselves. I hope that my students don't just use these self-regulation tools in my classroom, but apply them to other settings, including the home. School is not the only place they will get frustrated, but I want them to feel safe and prepared to self-regulate their emotions.
