My students live in one of the more "urban" areas of Memphis. They come from homes of poverty and in some cases, they are homeless. I call them heroes because in spite of their circumstances, my students want to learn. They request homework and enjoy challenges. Their best mode for learning is hands-on activities and games. Like most kids they are competitive. But they also compete against themselves, in that they strive to improve themselves continually.
