I was in a training and a couple of the ladies said that it really hurt them growing up on seeing someone that looked like them represented in books that the teacher read. The only time they saw them was in the month of February and it only had to do with slavery. I want to have more diverse books in my class that I can read to my students in the hopes that every child can connect with one of the characters in a positive way. I read to my students twice a week on Zoom during this closure and want more diverse books to read.
