At 9 and 10 years old, my students are just beginning to reach the point in their lives where they are exploring who they are and their identities. I have a highly diverse class in a highly diverse school, with students from many different races and religions; students who, this year in particular, have also begun exploring topics such as their gender identity and questioning who it is that they will one day love. I want to provide by students with high-interest literature that will engage them intellectually, while also meeting their spiritual and emotional needs. I want to provide my students with a sense of inclusion and acceptance in my classroom, and part of that is offering representation.
