Reading culturally relevant texts teaches students by allowing opportunities to make connections to characters! When you are able to see someone like yourself in a text, you are more likely to engage. My students are several grades below reading level and with these texts, they will practice reading and build stamina because of the high interest level. Students will also be able to practice discussion skills through Socratic Seminar questions based on the texts: Refugee and Parrot in the Oven. My hope is that my excitement with these texts will help to establish a culture of reading and learning.
