Music is best when it is shared. These "Family Music Making Kits" will enable my students to share their experiences from music class with their family and friends. I have chosen specific items to hone the necessary skills of a beginning musician. One of the most important skills for young musicians to master is finding the steady beat of the music. The sticks and egg shakers will aid the students in moving to the beat of the music as well as playing loud and soft (quiet) dynamics. The scarf will be used to teach expressive movement. Responding to dynamics and tempo as well as style and articulation will connect the students to the music in an artful way. These skills will be with the students as they grow up and clap along at concerts, dance at weddings and family reunions, and experience live music in church and community settings. The kit will also include directions from me to find recordings of music, practice poems and fingerplays from class, and other activities for the whole family to engage in music making.
