The materials I have selected will be available for every child to help them regulate their sensory needs on a personal level. The tools I have selected will help my students self regulate, move and self sooth as they feel the need. When they self regulate as they need, they will be more successful in their academic successes. First graders need lots of movement breaks. They need to touch and explore. They need to have items and opportunities to take care of their own needs. Research shows that children need to regulate for academic and social emotional success. In my classroom we have a shared bucket of sensory items for kids to use as needed. With the changes in guidelines for school as we head back to school in the fall, this will no longer be allowed. Each child will need their own container of items to help them regulate their needs. We will learn how to use the items in their containers, how to take care of them and how to properly access them as needed. Having more sensory items in my classroom will lesson the sharing that has normally happened with the seat cushions and sensory chair bands. The music cds are used to have a calming experience during times of transitions and work time. All these choices will help my students be more successful and help them learn to advocate for themselves and their needs.
