In our Functional Skills classroom, learning is done hands-on as much as possible. My students need more than just books, binders, and pencils to learn. The students I work with have a unique learning style and curriculum. My students require a lot of visuals to aid in their learning. Also, they require a life skills-based curriculum. A life skills-based curriculum will help students gain independence as they transition into adulthood. They need hands-on activities. This is provided to them through tasks boxes. A task box inspires learning by students doing. For example, in my classroom, I have a task box that is dedicated to sorting silverware. The plastic box is a mixture of silverware, and three baskets, one basket for knives, forks, and spoons. Students begin by opening the box and taking out the three baskets. They then sort the silverware into the correct basket. This skill is something they will need to know how to do to live independently, but it could also be a skill that would help them be employable.
