During this time of distance learning I have been learning myself what students need to be problem solvers, communicators, collaborators, and critical thinkers. I have learned that tying any challenge to a piece of literature sparks an interest in the project. They can make connections, and get excited about the project to come.
At this time, the majority of my students do not have their own books, and rely on library books that were chosen based on learning levels. This means that books about STEAM/STEM in the real world may have been looked over. I would love to give each of my students the opportunity to read to the class, and follow along with stories that will spark their creativity. They can record themselves through technology reading the books, sharing their ideas, or even completing a challenge tied to a book. In Google Groups, we can share what our thinking and planning process is for a challenge and see the connections made from the literature to themselves. I can send the books to students to use from home and create their own book reports and read these stories to the class. I can also read to my class as they love to hear my expressions!
I know my students will love books we can add to our distance learning Groups meetings, and they will then be hooked to the ideas behind the stories. When in person we will have a great start to classroom learning that all will appreciate tremendously.
