My students are from Quinhagak, Alaska. They are Yupik Eskimos, and the village is in the Tundra on the Bering Sea. They depend on subsistence for their food; It is part of the cultural norm. They love to learn and especially about other cultures. Most of the students have never been out of Bethel, the bigger village 70 miles west, much less Alaska. The people have to take small airplanes to get to Bethel. They are a very sensitive and caring people. The students do not have a lot of things to do in the village, they are creative in the activities they play. No roads just gravel. There are few cars and everyone has a four wheeler, and a boat. The winters are very harsh, sometimes reaching -50. The residents start preparing for the winters in early spring. The students are very involved in fishing, hunting, berry picking, egg finding and cooking. It is quite an experience for me!
