When I had the opportunity to engage in mindfulness, which is focusing on the present moment instead of worrying about the past or future, with students and other educators, I became a believer. I have seen students make safer decisions and handle conflict successfully when they are able to use tools that help them become aware of their thoughts, feelings, and actions. I also observed how other educators and I are able to help students solve conflicts after we taught and engaged students using mindful strategies. Mindfulness, in the form of brain breaks and deep breathing, has become a part of many schools’ daily routine, but many students who struggle with focus and attention need movement in order to access the benefits of mindfulness. I was thrilled to discover Breathe for Change, a yoga teacher training designed specifically for educators, by educators and yoga practitioners. The training focuses on social emotional health and prepares attendees to use yoga and mindfulness to help students. I am committed to teach students, who are at risk for unemployment or prison, learn a better way to manage behaviors. This training will give me the skills needed to become a successful Social Emotional Learning-Facilitator. With this certification, I will be able to integrate mindful movement into the classroom, and will reach out to families and colleagues at after school professional development so they can gain the benefits and share it with their children and students. This virtual professional development opportunity will take me five months to complete. I am excited for the personal growth this experience will bring and look forward to being able to share my experience with others in order to help them improve their physical and mental health through mindfulness and yoga.
