Ten years in and I am beginning to consider myself a veteran teacher. Truthfully, flexible seating is not a tool I would have considered essential during my earlier years. However, after an implementation here and there, I see how it can be beneficial for the majority of my students. I have completed research on the topic to provide more insight. Flexible seating permits students to be relaxed and engaged in their learning. Ask yourself, would you rather sit in a hard, stiff chair all day or have the option to be comfortable and interested? And, we are adults with longer attention spans. Flexible seating would allow me to make a fundamental change to my classroom atmosphere. Flexible seating implements choice and commitment to education. Students have a better understanding of personal space, but this tool will allow them the developmentally-appropriate capacity to learn. I feel my students will truly get what they need to make academic growth, enhance brain development, and establish social skills. It may not solve an abundance of issues in education or make every individual accountable but it can be the first step to granting students the freedom to have ownership in their learning process.
