When students read articles or short passages in isolation it can be more difficult to apply reading concepts. When we work together in literature circles and do novel studies as a class we are able to dissect different concepts such as main idea, theme, author's purpose, etc. Beyond the benefits in the students reading skills these novels are excellent in promoting language development and provide my bilingual students with mirrors and windows where they can view others perspectives but also relate to the story being told. These novels promote discussion, a true sense of classroom community, and growth within my students as people and readers.
